Owning a Domain
A domain is the unique address that users type into their web browser to access a specific website. It serves as the human-readable identifier for a website’s location on the internet. Domains typically consist of two parts: the top-level domain (TLD), such as .com, .org, .net, and the second-level domain (SLD), which is the unique name chosen by the website owner (e.g., example.com). When a user enters a domain name into their browser, the Domain Name System (DNS) translates this name into the corresponding IP address of the hosting server where the website files are stored, allowing the user’s browser to connect to the correct server and retrieve the website content. Domain registration services allow individuals or organizations to register and claim ownership of a specific domain name for a set period, usually annually or biennially.
